Letter book, 1789 Jun.-1800 Apr., of William Kenyon of New York City, containing extensive outgoing correspondence to merchants, ships' captains, and associates in England, the West Indies, and other locations in the United States. Letters relate to various matters of interest to export-import merchants of the period, such as the various dangers facing merchant ships at sea, troubles with the French and French privateers, high insurance rates, supply and demand of important trade goods such as wheat, coffee, cotton, indigo, etc., the disposition and condition of individual vessels, the purchase or chartering of vessels, status of specific accounts with business associates, consignments, etc. Kenyon additionally refers to the 1798 outbreaks of yellow fever which plagued New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, the flight of citizens from these cities, and the resulting disruption to trade.
